Kids bedroom design can be a true challenge but it is also so very enjoyable and rewarding. Working with fun shapes and colors is always exciting, and so is the opportunity to let our imagination run wild while we create a truly magical world. Before we furnish up a kids’ room however, there are some things that it would be nice to have in mind.
What is there to know about kids bedroom interior design?
Functionality is of utmost importance.
Proper layout is significant in kids bedrooms, as they usually accommodate many different needs. There we should find a place for a sleep, study, play and storage area and possibly an entertainment area with a TV. It is hard to give a universal recipe for proper layout, as personal needs and room size should be taken into account when we furniture around. Still, it is usually a good idea to leave plenty of free space in the middle and set all the furnishings around. It is recommended to find a place for large wardrobes and cabinets in the inner part of the room and reserve the well lit area by the windows for a study desk. Depending on personal views and room characteristics however, other options are also possible.
Child safety is extremely important.
Sharp edges are unacceptable in a kids bedroom because they are hazardous and can easily do damage to a child’s health. It is recommended that all edges are slightly rounded, but smooth oval shapes are generally preferred. It is also good to consider including soft upholstered elements into the design – you can easily have them in the bed or in the headboard. Some materials such as glass and mirrors should be avoided. They can be replaced with safer alternatives such as Plexiglas and acrylic boards that are light and unbreakable.
It is good to consider adaptive design.
Little ones grow up really quick which leads to changes in their personal needs. It is good to have that in mind when designing a kids bedroom. For example, one thing to think about is organizing storage space in a way that toys can easily be replaced by books and school supplies. Some manufacturers sell extendable beds that can change their size as the child grows. This way, they would take up less space when the kid is little, leaving more free room for fun and games. Also. it is nice to consider the possibility of future changes in the household members, so that you do not have to worry about squeezing in another bed if another kid pops up. It is extremely easy to at least add a pull out mattress under the bed – that would generally come in handy when your kid is having a sleepover party, as well.
The choice of colors and decoration is unlimited.
Neutral palettes, bright colors, fun patterns… anything is possible in kids bedroom design. The classic choice of pink for girls and blue for boys never goes out of style, but there are other options that are also worth considering. Some colors such as yellow and green can be universally applied in girls’ and boys’ bedrooms alike. Light neutral shades are also equally suitable for young ladies and gentlemen, as well as for grown up kids. With just a little bit of color accents the design could easily become cheerful and fun, while elegant and stylish at the same time. Color options in darker shades have a more dramatic appeal and can be particularly great for teenagers with a strong personality. Such a palette would however need to be balanced out with some lighter hues and color accents. A themed bedroom design, inspired by teen idols and book or movie characters, is another fun and popular idea. Should you choose to go with that trend however, you should have in mind that kids’ interests can shift rapidly – often faster than you would be able to do a remodel and a change of decor.
