Drywall ceilings are a popular trend in modern interior design. They can have a great visual appeal, but also serve strictly utilitarian purposes by concealing HVAC systems and wiring for example. Still, their decorative appeal is often expressly sought after, and the design possibilities are practically unlimited. This makes drop ceilings suitable for any interior design style – from classic to modern.
What should we have in mind when we design a drop ceiling?
The part it plays in the design of an interior space
All interior design elements must be carefully considered. This is even more important with drop ceilings as they are much more than interior decor – they are an inseparable part of the interior architecture of the living space. That is why it is essential that we carefully think about the purposes that we would want it to serve – no matter whether we use it to fix uneven ceiling surfaces, install recessed lighting or have it as a decor element.
The way it may affect the height of the room
No matter how much we love drop ceilings, we should always remember that they would inevitably eat up a portion of the rooms full height. That could be an issue in tight spaces with low ceilings. An inappropriately designed drop ceiling may suffocate a living space and badly affect comfort of living. Careful consideration is always a must.
The way it relates to functional organization in a room
Having your drop ceiling designed according to the functional layout underneath is always a good idea in interior design. A clever use of geometric shapes and different levels in the design can help us define the separate areas in a room and put an accent on some of them. For example we could have the drop ceiling go around the sitting area and have greater height in that exact part of the living room.
The interior lighting plan and layout
Designing your drop ceiling and planning your lighting system should go hand in hand. It is important to figure out the type, number and location of all lighting fixtures that will be used to illuminate the space. This is important for the design of the drop ceiling. Suspended chandeliers are often used as accents and can be encompassed by a drop ceiling. LED strip lighting is another feature that the ceiling design should be in tune with. Recessed downlights are often a popular choice in modern interior designs. It is good to place them around the room in a regular pattern so that light is evenly distributed throughout the space.
Design and form development
Drop ceilings are a great way to make a statement in interior design. They can be of great help when we want to create a one of a kind interior space, but they can also be an eyesore if badly designed. We have often come across drop ceiling designs that are way too flashy, loud and visually aggressive. There are no limits to creative thinking, but sometimes it is better to opt for a more simple and balanced design.
The choice of color and finish materials
Choosing a finish material for your drop ceiling is the last (but not least) step in the design process. There are lots of options to consider – regular paint, plasterwork, panelling… These could be plain or multicolored, mat or glossy, smooth or textured… It is even possible to apply a combination of various techniques! It is all a matter of imagination and creativity.
